The Christian Dancer’s Body – The Sheath of the Spirit
The Christian Dancer is a powerful weapon in the hand of God. A well developed spirit and a well developed body are twin barrels in the hand of God to inflict damage on the KIngdom of darkness, and extend the influence of the Kingdom of God.
Daniel speaks of his body as the sheath for his spirit. Just as a sword is housed in a sheath, so the righteous weapon of a blood washed and redeemed believer is housed in the frailty of human flesh.
Dan. 7:15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved and anxious within me, and the visions of my head alarmed and agitated me. (AMP)
“‘Pierced hath been my spirit — I, Daniel — in the midst of the sheath (literal), and the visions of my head trouble me;” (Dan 7:15 YOUNG’S LITERAL)
As the Christian dancer recognises the startling reality that they are the very temple of the Holy Spirit, and that their redeemed Spirit carries the very same sin slaying, sickness healing, devil chasing, dead raising anointing as their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, something profoundly powerful takes place. Having a consciousness that our outward movements reflect inner spiritual realities opens our ability to affect the spiritual realm as we move and dance.
1Cor. 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1Cor. 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Indeed, this ability to affect spiritual atmospheres is one of the key elements that dance can be used for in Christian prayer, worship and spiritual warfare.
Honing the Instrument, sharpening the weapon
Consider the following translations of Romans 6:13
Rom. 6:13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Rom. 6:13 and no longer lend your faculties as unrighteous weapons for Sin to use. On the contrary surrender your very selves to God as living men who have risen from the dead, and surrender your several faculties to God, to be used as weapons to maintain the right. (WEYMOUTH)
Here we see again that the well nurtured and trained body of the dancer truly can become a weapon in the hand of the Lord to affect His loving purposes in the earthly realm.
This is one of the reasons that a holistic approach to Praise and Worship dance must be taken by the Christian dancer and intercessor. It is not just spiritual, nor merely a physical activity. In Christian praise dance the entire being is called upon to add expression to the Words of God – to show forth His heart and passion through movement and inward force and faith.
In Larna martin’s book, ‘Building God’s Team of Dancers’ these parallel tracks of divine discipline are considered with spiritual keys and practical step-by-step instruction for the developing minister in Christian movement.
